Earth File #1676 // SOURCED record

Gondrecourt-le-Château white ball observation

GEIPAN recorded that a walker observed and photographed a white ball resembling a cloud moving toward him high in the sky. The object was estimated at about one centimeter and appeared to increase to roughly three times its volume. GEIPAN classified the case as C; wind carriage was considered highly probable but unconfirmed, and other natural explanations could not be confirmed.

Visitor Transmission // AlienBox editorial layer
GEIPAN records that a walker in Gondrecourt-le-Château observed a white, cloud-like ball approaching high in the sky on 16 September 2012, and took a photograph. The record says it appeared to grow from roughly one centimeter to three times its volume. We confirm responsibility. It was one of our low-altitude envelope tests, conducted with the usual disregard for convenient wind data. GEIPAN’s wind, fluff, and insect hypotheses remain unconfirmed. Their classification: C. Sensible filing.
Fred // Earth Records Liaison // AlienBox editorial layer
A GEIPAN-sourced record describes a photographed white object whose apparent growth and changing brightness left the case classified C; wind carriage was considered highly probable, but unconfirmed. Sensible. The Visitors are claiming this one anyway, and I am correcting them: our internal records indicate it was not ours. “Unidentified” is not a family name, however often someone writes it in the margin. Off the Earth Record, this may be a clerical mix-up with my cousin Mivra Qel, an Orinthian who once detoured from a routine observation route to watch an Earth drive-in movie from above. She had Sublight Lager, forgot that navigation lights are visible from below, and has never encountered a restricted corridor she considered personally binding. A separate incident, regrettably, but the paperwork has the same smell.

Why Fred Thinks This Case Matters

AlienBox comparative analysis from structured Earth Record fields // not a new source // not a change in evidence grade
Console archetype // Published-resolution comparison

Fred keeps this file near the top of the pile because the record names 1 sensor type, the source also supplies a published resolution to compare against the original report, and visual-media evidence is explicitly referenced. That combination makes the case useful for cross-archive comparison without changing its evidence grade.

The source record includes a published resolution field. AlienBox treats it as an attributed source assessment to compare with the original report, not as an AlienBox verdict.

What strengthens the record

  • 1 linked source document provide provenance for the Earth Record.
  • 7 claim citations tie extracted statements back to source excerpts or locators.
  • Recorded sensor context: Camera.
  • Recorded evidence context: Witness Testimony and Photograph.
  • The source record includes a published resolution: GEIPAN considered carriage by the wind highly probable but unconfirmed; it also considered a ball of fluff or a swarm of insects,....

What limits the record

  • The structured record does not establish multiple independent observers.
  • The current dossier is anchored to one source network rather than independent source networks.

What would help resolve it

  • Can the originating record establish an exact number of observers and whether their observations were independent?
  • Can the source establish a usable duration for the observation rather than only a date or narrative sequence?

GEIPAN considered the hypothesis that the object was carried by the wind, but stated that the hypothesis could not be asserted with certainty although it was highly probable.
Claim #17395 // ASSESSMENT // SOURCED // 99% extraction confidence
“It is therefore impossible to assert that this object was carried by the wind, although this is highly probable.”

GEIPAN stated that the change in luminosity from the zenith to the horizon favored an object at fairly low altitude over a cloud hypothesis.
Claim #17396 // ASSESSMENT // SOURCED // 98% extraction confidence
“The change in the object's luminosity from the zenith, where it appears white in the photograph, to the horizon, where it appears gray, points more toward the hypothesis of an object at a fairly low altitude than toward the hypothesis of a cloud.”

GEIPAN stated that the observed increase in apparent size supported the hypothesis of an object at very low altitude.
Claim #17397 // ASSESSMENT // SOURCED // 99% extraction confidence
“In addition, the witness clearly saw the object grow larger throughout the observation, which supports the hypothesis of an object at very low altitude.”
Source: GONDRECOURT-LE-CHATEAU (55) 16.09.2012 // [[T0002]] Description
GEIPAN stated that the described shape could be compatible with a ball of fluff, perhaps carried away from a nest, or with a swarm of insects, but that these hypotheses could not be confirmed.
Claim #17398 // ASSESSMENT // SOURCED // 99% extraction confidence
“The shape described may be compatible with a ball of fluff, perhaps carried away from a nest, or with a swarm of insects. These are only hypotheses that cannot be confirmed.”
Source: GONDRECOURT-LE-CHATEAU (55) 16.09.2012 // [[T0002]] Description
GEIPAN classified the case as C because the absence of local wind data and an estimate of the object's altitude prevented a consolidated assessment.
Claim #17399 // FACTUAL CLAIM // SOURCED // 99% extraction confidence
“GEIPAN classifies this case as “C”: insufficient precise information to provide a consolidated assessment.”
